We Will Be Taking a Brief Intermission for the Sanity of the Author

Dear Lovely Readers of My Blog,

This week has been so busy. I will catch you up on my life next week as this week has me running as fast as I can trying to keep up. I hope that you all are having an exciting, fun, relaxing week full of sleep. :) Talk to you soon!

If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It's the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep. ~Dale Carnegie

Hello! I hope you all are having a good week. I know I am. It has been a trying week as far as homework goes, but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? Thanksgiving Break is so close. I can hardly wait to get home, spend some time with my loved ones and sleep sooooo much! Hanging of the Green is coming up as well! I am very excited about that. Only two more weeks and some change are left of this semester. Finals are coming up which should be interesting and challenging to say the least. There are a lot of concerts and events happening around this time of year as well. That is something Georgetown does very well through the NEXUS program. Each student is required to attend a certain number of events each semester in order to graduate. Most of these events are particularly interesting. Tonight I plan to attend the band concert in the chapel as a few of my friends are playing in it. Basketball games are starting to happen as well. It seems as though I find myself at the majority of them either because my friends want to go or I am on the sidelines. We have a really good time, and I would encourage students to attend.
This week at Georgetown is filled with anticipation for the coming break. It seems to be the topic of conversation among everyone here. At Georgetown you get Thursday and Friday off making it a long weekend. If you are lucky you won’t have class on Wednesday, but those people, who the planets have aligned for this momentous event to happen, are few and far between. I had two papers due on Monday and Tuesday. One was in English on ‘Obedience to Authority’ and the other was in Psychology on ‘Stereotypes and Prejudice’. The rest of my week is somewhat slow as far as the academic side of things, but it is definitely challenging and enough to keep you busy. The best advice I can offer about college around this time of year is doing things early and when you have the motivation. Something about being so close to a break wakes a nature of procrastination in the heart of the average college student, (not speaking from experience here or anything.) Sincerely, I have gotten a lot of things done early this year, and I attribute my remaining level of sanity to this fact.
College learning is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I love it here at Georgetown! My entire outlook on life and my thought processes have changed so much for the better. The two really nice things about college academics is you are required to form opinions and back up those opinions with legitimate facts and the professors foster and encourage creativity and ingenuity.
I hope you are all having a good week as this semester begins to wind down. Have a great Thanksgiving, eat until you feel as if you are about to pop, hang out with family and friends and remember to pause for a second and think of something for which you are thankful. Have a great extended weekend! Until next time…

If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It's the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep. ~Dale Carnegi

Hello! I hope and trust each of you is doing well. It was a wild week. Registration happened along with VIP day. Two of my good friends had overnight visitors (from Paducah!) stay with them on Sunday night. This is a great way to get an idea of what Georgetown is really like. First-hand experience was how I decided I wanted to be a part of Georgetown College. My parents came up to see me this weekend as well, which was awesome. Thanksgiving break is right around the corner along with finals and major projects for classes.
My week began a bit slowly with a few papers here and there for Foundations 111 along with a debate in the same class over the industrial revolution and Marx’s Communist Manifesto. Everything began to pick up after turning in my final draft of the thesis-driven essay for Foundations. Thursday found me awake bright and early for registration for the spring semester. You register for you next semester’s classes a little bit more than a month prior to Christmas Break; you get up early to try to get all the classes you would like. It is a strange feeling planning the rest of your life by the way, just a freebie from me to you. I got all of my classes, except for one, which was probably for the best in hindsight. Friday found me going to class, writing two papers and cheering at two basketball games that night. This weekend was so busy yet good. I encourage all of you to attend a Georgetown sporting event if you come up to visit. There is generally a basketball or volleyball game to go to most times. It is a great atmosphere and very exciting.
My parents drove up on Saturday to spend the day and part of Sunday with me. I had a few things to take care of before they got here, so I did not sleep as much as I had intended. I can’t complain though, as they had a much earlier morning than I did. That is a major dilemma in college by the way: sleep versus productivity. I’ve learned that the hard way several times throughout the semester. Everything went well and got done though. Coffee and Hong’s (Donut Express) were definitely a contributing factor to how much was accomplished. I met several new friends Sunday from the overnight program. I hope you all are reading this. Hello by the way. If you are interested in coming on an overnight visit, contact your admissions counselor.
That is something else I want to talk to you all about. This first year will present new challenges and great triumphs for you. Your friends, Resident Advisors, Resident Directors, Freshman Family Groups, peer educators, admissions counselors, professors and everyone else at Georgetown are here to support you. I can personally attest to this. They are great people.
I hope your senior year is going well. It is a great time in your life. Remember to enjoy it. If you need anything or want to ask a current student something about the college, I would be more than happy to help in any way I can. I hope you all have a great week!

"Do or do not... there is no try." - Yoda

Welcome back! Okay so I thought that the quote was a nice touch, perhaps a bit random but hey. I trust that you are doing well or at least I hope and pray you are. This week has been a bit more relaxed than the past few weeks on the school side of things. I did find out the specifics of three big papers that I am going to write in the next few weeks. Oh, by the way, only five more weeks of college until my first semester is over! Finals are coming up as well. I will keep you posted on that. Also, I register for classes on Thursday.
More often than not last week Zac, John, Tevin and I ended up chilling in Zac and John’s room watching a movie and working on papers. My days were full of classes and trying to get things accomplished. My big project for last week was finishing my Foundations 111 Thesis-Driven Essay. Three drafts later, I am starting to think I might actually get it the way I want it. It was an extended essay on The Apology by Plato. I have two big papers coming up as well, one in Psychology 111 and the other in English 112. My psychology paper is a 1,250 word essay on stereotypes and prejudice. My English paper deals with obedience to authority and has to be 8-10 pages. I have about three finals this semester that I need to start working on. I also have a Music Appreciation test I need to study for this week. Don’t let all of my papers scare you. I promise you can handle it. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but as long as you set aside time each day to work on it, the papers will get done.
I have a few suggestions for college I would like to share with you all. When the entire staff at college tells you they are there to help you, believe and utilize them. Help is available for you in the form of tutoring, the wellness center, teachers and many other places. Another thing that helps is having a stapler in your room. It may seem elementary, but many freshmen overlook it. If you have problems with your dorm, roommate, floor or living arrangements, talk to someone about it. Freshmen leadership opportunities are open for students to apply around the beginning of the second semester, so keep that in mind and do well in school. Some of the positions, like Resident Advisors, get paid; it is also a way to be involved. I would greatly encourage everyone to get involved any way they can. I cannot stress enough to attend school functions such as football games, performances, art showings, mission projects and other events. The more you put into your college experience, the more you will get out of it.
Hang in there with your senior year. It is a great one. I hope you all have a great week! Talk to you soon.

Forrest Gump

Hello! I want to welcome all of you fine people back and thank you for reading my blog. This week I just want to ramble a bit, so please excuse me if I speak more haphazardly than normal.
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” College life is a lot like that. You could wake up one morning and by some miracle have all your classes cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. Another option is getting an email detailing all the things you have to accomplish before midnight. One day, like today for instance, you could play basketball with some friends and lose track of time for a while. Or you could have to go to the LRC right after class and stay there until it closes working on homework, tests, etc. But honestly, college life and I “go together like peas and carrots.” The new experience that happens each and every day is exciting and makes life interesting. I cannot name a day when I did not experience something new and different here at Georgetown. College life is busy as well. I am sure I am not telling you anything you didn’t already know though. If you are anything like me, you were involved in everything in high school that you could be involved with and still get respectable amounts a sleep at night. Ha, Ha. From the moment I set foot on Georgetown’s campus that first day, I have been running. “Now you wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I could run like the wind blows. From that day on, if I was ever going somewhere, I was running!” One day I was hungry, so I decided to make a run to Subway with friends, (you can use your G-Card there by the way, along with Fava’s and Papa John’s.) After we went to Subway, we figured we would run over to the Mulberry CafĂ©, (the campus coffee shop where you can use your G-Card and, at select times, use your meals there.) After that, we made a little run over to the Grill to see what was happening there. We figured since we had come that far, we would run over to the REC and play some ping-pong. (As a side note, I do not play ping-pong with a Flexolite ping-pong paddle. On another side note, the REC is the campus activities and recreation facility. I know, I do point out the obvious. They have two pool tables and a ping-pong table along with two basketball courts and a gym. It is a great place to go hang out, play a sport or workout.) We decided not to run across Greenbow County, the entire state of Mississippi or run into an ocean and turn around. As I mentioned earlier, I remembered my first day of college. “You know it's funny what a young man recollects, 'cause I don't remember bein' born. I don't recall what I got for my first Christmas and I don't know when I went on my first outdoor picnic. But I do remember the first time” I went to college. I was very nervous about it, but after a few weeks, I feel perfectly at home here at Georgetown. Another thing I was apprehensive about was the food. If you get to know me, I have a tendency to eat, oh let’s just say, more than my fair share. The CAF has all kinds of good things to eat like tortellini, chicken BLT’s, shrimp and rice, etc. “Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautĂ© it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.” Okay, so maybe I wasn’t exactly sayin’ that.
I know that I really have not said much of consequence. “It happens….sometime.” I just hope you might have been at least entertained and your day brightened a bit by something that was said. I know your senior year can be tiresome, a bit boring and drag on for forever. Remember to just keep running. It will all pay off in the end. I hope you are having and will continue to have a fantastic week. Until next time…
